The role of the IT department has changed dramatically, and they need your help. Today’s modern workforce looks and behaves differently from those in the past. Younger workers grew up with smartphones, tablets and technology that provided instant access to powerful tools and information. As younger generations enter the workforce, more workers bring with them usability expectations, which must be addressed.
What do today’s workers expect?
Workers today call for seamless access to the applications they need on any number of computing devices—PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones—issued by the company or BYOD. If a worker can’t easily access the tools they need to conduct their job, they’ll find and use their own.
The use of “shadow IT” obviously creates managerial and security issues with which no one wants to deal. After all, history shows that the most damaging security lapses happened when end users took IT matters into their own hands. An organization can have the most secure platform and application delivery method, but if it’s complicated to use, end users will find a way to circumvent it. The challenge, therefore, for many of your customers is balancing security with easy access to apps across many devices.
Thankfully, digital workspace solutions can help.
Digital workspace benefits
In the past, business applications were either easy to access or secure, and IT departments had to choose one or the other.
VMware Workspace ONE
allows your customers to simply and securely deliver and manage any app on any device, giving IT departments the best of both worlds, while also meeting the needs of end users.
- Seamless access to applications: Leveraging VMware’s Identity Manager, it’s possible to use third-party authentication methods to verify the identity of a person attempting to access IT resources.
- Security: Verify that devices, company-owned and BYOD, meet current security rules to access applications and network resources. If a device falls out of compliance, access can be revoked until rules are met.
There are currently four different versions of VMware Workspace ONE available:
- Standard: secure access and device management
- Advanced: unified endpoint management and secure mobile apps
- Enterprise: intelligence-driven secure digital workspace with Horizon apps
- Enterprise for VDI: intelligence-driven secure digital workspace with Horizon Cloud
The Enterprise for VDI edition is particularly interesting. Many in our industry believe we’ll eventually see the end of traditional desktop computing. Workspace ONE can deliver on this promise. Rather than an employee being assigned a device that needs to be configured and maintained, they can bring their own device, click on a web link and use multifactor authentication to access the apps they need in a single sign-on portal. A new employee can be onboarded in less than an hour.
Nearly any organization with 25 or more users can benefit from Workspace ONE. Workspace ONE is available as a cloud service or for on-premises deployment. Pricing is available per device or user, and perpetual licenses are also available.
If you’re interested in building your recurring revenue, a service provider model is available, which gives you a cloud subscription to Workspace ONE. You can invite customers into your own branded Workspace ONE multitenant environment, controlling the cost, included services and your margin.
