The end of general support for vSphere 5.5 is Sept. 19, 2018, so now’s the time to upgrade from vSphere 5.5 to vSphere 6.5 or 6.7. As a reseller partner, there are several ways that you can ensure a smooth transition for your customers. Here are three things you should do to make sure that your customers have a smooth upgrade, maintain support from VMware and avoid downtime to keep business as usual.
Run an assessment
Encourage your customers to run a vSphere Optimization Assessment (VOA). The VOA will produce four reports that will show performance, capacity, configuration and costs, and events across multicloud environments. This assessment will allow you and your customers to understand how they’re currently operating and create the foundation on which to build a personalized migration strategy.
Observe the hardware compatibility list
Help your customers understand the full spectrum of updates required as they upgrade to vSphere 6.5 or 6.7 by referencing the Hardware Compatibility List. This list will allow you to approach your customers with a comprehensive approach to their upgrade, as well as set the foundation for future conversations concerning their hardware needs. Depending on the state of your customers’ hardware infrastructure and servers, there’s a chance that they’ll need to refresh some hardware to ensure that they continue to have a seamless VMware experience. There will be a cost associated with that refresh, so you want to make sure you’re painting a complete picture of what their upgrade journey will look like.
Review published migration guides
Take a look at VMware’s published migration guides. These guides will provide you and your customers with a systematic approach to upgrading to the latest version of vSphere. It will show your customers what needs to be upgraded first to avoid downtime, as well as provide guidance for the proper upgrade procedure. With this guide, your customers will execute the migration path that’s right for them.
The upgrade to vSphere 6.5 also brings new features, improvements and updated services. Here are the top 10 reasons to upgrade.
