When you think about the most lucrative verticals for selling UCC solutions, the public sector doesn’t immediately jump to mind. That’s changing. As state and local governments, public works departments, public safety officials and others look to increase efficiencies, reduce costs and better serve the community, any technologies that can help are of interest.
UCC solutions—made even more powerful through integrations to other ancillary technologies—can be used by the public sector in many ways to address these needs. Here are some examples:
- Basic communication—As we’ve grown accustomed to being able to connect many ways with businesses in the private sector, we expect similar efficiencies in the public sector. As such, the core features and capabilities of a UCC solution address the needs of the public sector very well. Even a small city can benefit from a UCC solution that uses automated attendants, includes messaging and allows employees to route calls within or across departments.
- Videoconferencing—Not only can public sector entities benefit from having internal video meetings, but some municipalities have adopted videoconferencing technologies to allow constituents to virtually attend and participate in council meetings.
- Mobile empowerment—Since many departments have employees in the field, UCC features such as presence, unified messaging and the ability to route calls to a mobile device can keep remote workers connected and working efficiently.
- Law enforcement—There are a variety of UCC applications possible in this niche if you’re willing to think beyond the basics of UCC. New handheld radios are incorporating UCC features such as presence to become more useful to those using them. In addition, wearable devices such as body cameras could be considered part of a UCC solution.
- Public transportation and safety—IoT is redefining what’s possible with communications. Sensors that monitor temperature or air quality can be tied into a UCC system to issue advisories to government officials or the public.
Fundamentally, a UCC solution will allow an agency or agencies to communicate more effectively, make more informed decisions and keep projects moving forward. Many government agencies are using legacy PBX-style communications systems. An upgrade to even the most basic UCC solution would provide a considerable improvement.
Not only does UCC improve communications, it has the potential to save money. Most agencies are faced with small and/or shrinking budgets. A UCC solution—particularly one that’s cloud-based—can reduce infrastructure costs, allow telework and increase productivity.
