Four Tips to Create a One-Page Strategic Plan

You’ve likely heard the maxim, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” And, deep in your heart, you know it’s true. If you could find time to put a true strategy in place, you would get ahead of the chaos and move faster and more easily toward your biggest goals.

But who has time to write out a huge plan when you’re doing everything you can just to put out all the fires that pop up every day?

That’s where having a simple, one-page strategic plan can help. By putting everything on one sheet of paper, you can quickly focus on the most important areas of your business each day so you drive forward more powerfully.

Here are four key components of a one-page strategic plan:

1. Foundations
Before you start writing down goals, make sure you have the foundations of your company’s success written down. These are your company’s values and vision. Take a few minutes to spell out your beliefs about the way people should behave in your business, as well as where you ultimately want to drive the company.

2. Long-Term Planning
Where do you want to be in three years? Five years? Lay out a few targets you would like to hit, as well as the changes you need to make to achieve them. Make sure your 3-5-year plans are in alignment with your vision so you are not dragging the company in multiple directions. Alignment equals efficiency and effectiveness.

3. Short-Term Planning
OK, now you can think about where you want to be in a year. Choose no more than five goals so you aren’t biting off more than you can chew. Once you have your goals, make a list of the parts of your business that you will have to change and invest in if you are going to accomplish your goals. Next, decide which projects need to be accomplished to make those changes happen.

4. Metrics
Make a list of five things you will track on a weekly basis to ensure you are making the changes necessary to reach your goals. Create a graph or chart for each metric that can act as a dashboard to keep you focused and watchful. Making your metrics visual allows you to understand them at a glance.
