How Big Data, Mobility, and the Internet of Things Connect



As a VAR, you know that in order to continue growing your business and your revenues, you need to stay informed on the technology trends driving your customers' IT purchases. Among all the trends that have gotten buzz in the last few years, few have been hotter than Big Data, mobility, and the Internet of Things (IoT). And these trends don't exist in a vacuum. In fact, they all intersect, and understanding how they intersect can help you most effectively leverage them to increase your sales. Let's take a look at how.

Most enterprises will consider Big Data and mobility their two priorities for the practical business value they can provide. Mobility (and its close cousin, BYOD) greatly enhances employee availability, responsiveness, engagement, and productivity. Big Data, meanwhile, can provide a wealth of actionable business insights extracted in real time from the terabytes and petabytes of data organizations are now mining.

But what about the Internet of Things?

The IoT is perhaps the most abstract of the three technology trends under discussion here. At a high level, the Internet of Things is simply the idea that every device can be an IP-enabled sensor transmitting data across the Internet, creating a world in which people, objects, and backend systems are all seamlessly interconnected and working together to create the most efficient and data-rich experience possible.

Big Data and mobility intersect with the Internet of Things for one simple reason: Big Data and mobility belong to the IoT.

In the Internet of Things, mobile devices—and any other device or system collecting and transmitting information used for Big Data analytics—serve as sensors. They therefore fit within the overarching theme of the IoT, and their use as part of the IoT creates some very specific enterprise infrastructure needs.

First and foremost is the need for enhanced security. Big Data, mobility, and the Internet of Things in general all lead to a massive increase in the amount of data, much of it private, that an enterprise will have to process and store. VARs will need to familiarize themselves with security and privacy protection technologies to keep up. Context-aware security will become ever more critical, and distributor partnerships look set to be particularly helpful for VARs navigating the complex terrain.

Data center infrastructure and network infrastructure, particularly of the wireless variety, will also play a key enabling role in the IoT era. Provisioning speeds will be critical for the large numbers of new devices connecting to the network. Meanwhile, Big Data tends to dramatically increase the amount of east-west traffic within a data center and can also contribute to growth in north-south traffic. Simpler, more efficient network designs that offer high scalability and fast provisioning speeds will be important, as will greater capacity overall.

These are just a couple of the ways that Big Data, mobility, and the Internet of Things intersect and affect the enterprise.
