Extended Cyber Forecast: Cloudy With a Chance of Rain

By Mickey Woods, Technology Solutions Engineer, Ingram Micro

My grandfather didn’t believe in banks, so when the stock market crashed in 1929 he was thankful his money was safely tucked away inside the bedroom mattress. He couldn’t speak English, but he understood what it meant to plan for a rainy day, and lived by the creed that an ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure.

As billions of smart endpoints connect globally, it doesn’t take long for unauthorized users to find their way into secret places. Application-level attacks are on the rise and can give access to hackers who are trying to bring down your business. Factor in a wide variety of attack vectors, and the odds are quickly stacked against even your best security efforts. And when volumetric Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) hit your network edge, there’s little left to do but engage in crisis management. These threats can produce a “butterfly effect” and impact the future state of your business in ways hard to imagine—reinforcing the adage that “what you don’t know can really hurt you.”

There is a bright spot on the horizon, but signing up with the right technology partner will be an important decision for CXOs and their security teams. Selecting a manufacturer with operation centers located around the world will give you peace of mind for all your consumer markets. In addition to premise-based protection, a hybrid solution that utilizes global network coverage will help businesses keep information flowing and damage to a minimum. And a service that is always on or available—and the ability to activate protection from a single phone call—will increase customer confidence and help content delivery networks meet SLAs.

While cloud-based security solutions can challenge your IT budget, they pale in comparison to levied fees and penalties when things go wrong. And those post-mortem conversations with CEOs and board members will look closely at your financial risk-versus-reward strategy. As a result, the investment for such protection may be more of a bargain than you realize.

Almost 100 years have passed since the great crash, but the unknown can still keep us up at night. Aligning with a global network security leader can greatly reduce your risk and allow you to focus on what you do best: growing your business, delighting your customers and keeping shareholders happy. So when those dark clouds close in, look for a technology partner that can help you find that silver lining.
