The diagnosis and treatment of patients using medical information transmitted over long distances (sometimes via satellite) is becoming more prevalent as healthcare providers seek to offer improved access to medical services for patients in remote locations.
More than half of U.S. hospitals now have some form of telemedicine program in place, with the expectation that as telecommunications technology improves, more patients will take advantage of this form of clinical information delivery.
Telemedicine typically requires strong network infrastructures to provide electronic consultations through interactive, real-time interactions between patient and provider. Digital Signage as Training Aids
Most people encounter kiosks in retail environments, hotels or airports, but lately kiosks are being used to train people how to save lives.
A partnership between one kiosk designer and the American Heart Association came up with a kiosk that trains users in CPR by showing them a video on the proper way to administer compressions.
A video displayed on a screen directly above the kiosk and a separate touchscreen help get the user started on training. After watching the video, the kiosk takes the user through a teaching round, where he or she actually practices compressions on a mannequin.
The user then goes through further practice rounds, after which the kiosk provides feedback on the rate of compressions and hand placement.
While CPR kiosks are currently deployed at several airports around the U.S., including Chicago O'Hare International Airport, McCarran International Airport, Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, there is good reason to believe this type of kiosk solution could work elsewhere in the country. Solution providers could partner with kiosk manufacturers and medical providers to offer this type of unique digital signage solution to provide other types of training in various locations beyond airports.
Wayfinding, Teaching and More
More and more hospitals are deploying advanced digital signage wayfinding solutions designed to work from a smartphone app or kiosk to provide maps, GPS and location-based content.
Hospital visitors can download an app for their iPhone and Android smartphones that gives them turn-by-turn directions to every area of the hospital. If the visitor’s phone doesn’t support the app, he or she can also use an in-hospital kiosk to get his or her directions.
Hospitals are also improving on how they use flat-screen display panels to communicate information to visitors. Hospitals use digital signage to convey information about emergency alerts, pharmaceuticals, RSS feeds, cafeteria menus and entertainment.
Another trend occurring at many medical practices is that they are ditching the antiquated patient intake forms and using tablets for patient intake. The process is faster and more efficient and largely does away with having to store reams of hard-copy medical documents.
Further, medical schools around the U.S. are adopting digital signage as a means to communicate campus events, announce class schedules and more.
The healthcare vertical typically does not require the sometimes elaborate installations of, say, the retail vertical, but it does require specialized content along with digital signage hardware. Solution providers partnering with third-party content providers, or designing in-house, are in a great position to offer turnkey service to this rapidly growing vertical.
