Mobility is one of the hottest trends in IT today—especially within retail and restaurants. In fact, there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence and research that shows that traditional POS is giving way to mPOS (mobile POS). Orbis Research estimates that mPOS is growing at a CAGR of 33% per year through 2021. At the same time, some estimate that traditional POS is shrinking 3% to 6% per year.
This isn’t to say that traditional POS won’t still have a place on your line card. Indeed, for many merchants, traditional POS technology will remain the best solution. However, the (often) lower cost of mobility coupled with the benefits to your customers will drive mobile sales and adoption. Solution providers who aren’t taking action or don’t prepare now to sell mobile POS and payments are going to miss future opportunities.
Identify mobile opportunities
Depending on your vertical, mobile applications and opportunities will vary. For example, within retail, arming store associates with mobile devices, such as tablets, to handle inventory lookups, research and cash out customers is becoming more common. Within hospitality, many restaurateurs are using mobile devices for tableside ordering and payment.
Make security top of mind
Both mPOS solutions and mobile payment terminals require extra attention be paid to security. Start with secure Wi-Fi. While many of your customers probably already have wireless access points, if you’re going to use the network for payments, security standards must be met. For example, it’s imperative that firewalls are properly implemented and any traffic containing customer information is segmented from other network traffic.
To ensure there are no surprises when you go to deploy the mobile devices, make sure to perform a wireless and network assessment. There’s a good chance you’ll need to upgrade your customers’ Wi-Fi to accommodate the mobile POS and payment solution.
In addition, any devices being used for payments should be PCI-PTS 4.x-certified and the solution should be validated for point-to-point encryption (P2PE) so card data as well as the PIN number are encrypted.
