ITAD Reveals New Revenue Opportunities in Old Equipment

With new models of smartphones and tablets being introduced all the time in both consumer and commercial environments, users want the “latest and greatest,” making them all too ready to get rid of their old devices. Since people are upgrading their mobile devices and computers more frequently than ever before, e-waste is now the fastest-growing component of the municipal solid waste stream.

In addition, the rise of managed services in the cloud has more and more organizations redesigning and consolidating their hardware infrastructure, fueling the need to dispose of some of their existing equipment they no longer need to run business-critical applications. This leaves companies with the question of “what to do with the old stuff.”

Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as just tossing it away. The growing concern about data security makes it critical to destroy sensitive data inside computer hardware and mobile devices before disposal. And with organizations becoming acutely aware of their social and environmental responsibility—not to mention the need to comply with government regulations related to environmental protection—safe and efficient disposal has become a key priority. Glass, LCD panels, toner cartridges, hard drives, and other components of technology equipment all can have a detrimental impact on the environment if not handled properly.

Ingram Micro Can Help
As part of our commitment to being a responsible IT partner and corporate citizen, Ingram Micro provides complete IT asset disposition (ITAD) services, including efficient, environmentally responsible de-installation and removal; disposal; recycling; and destruction of retired IT equipment. You can market these to your customers as value-added services, and we’ll manage everything on your behalf. Options include:

  • Data Erasure and Destruction—Onsite and offsite degaussing, erasure and physical shredding services combined with an industry-leading chain-of-custody process to mitigate the risks of a data security breach.
  • De-Installation and Asset Removal—Onsite service technicians perform hardware de-installations and onsite serialized audits in the office and the data center.
  • Responsible Recycling—As a certified e-Stewards recycler, Ingram Micro adheres to stringent recycling requirements for electronic waste and ensures compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Logistics—Most pickups in the U.S. are completed with our employees and exclusive-use trucks. Onsite services include packaging and palletizing assets to prepare them for shipment.
  • Asset Processing—At our ITAD processing centers, each asset is audited and tracked throughout the disposition process.
  • Repair and Refurbishment—For maximum value recovery, when possible, we refurbish, repair or upgrade systems for reuse, when it’s cost-effective to do so.
  • Redeployment—When possible, clients can repurpose their equipment for use elsewhere in their organization. Ingram Micro will sanitize the data, repair and refurbish the assets as needed, and redeploy them with on-demand order fulfillment.
  • Remarketing—When possible, an advanced asset intelligence system and comprehensive network of sales channels enable us to identify assets with resale potential and provide maximum recovery value through resale. In those few instances when the used equipment does have remarket value, Ingram Micro will pass those dollars along to you.

ITAD Provides a Strategic Business Advantage

“ITAD should be an integral component to every reseller’s sales cycle right from the beginning, rather than an afterthought,” says Tom Bamrick, executive director, sales, Ingram Micro. “Besides providing additional service opportunities, it’s a great way to differentiate yourself as a customer’s partner for the entire technology lifecycle.”

ITAD services also give you greater visibility within a customer’s organization. You may have the opportunity to interface with departments other than IT, including legal, operations and logistics, which will be concerned with compliance and other procedural and environmental issues related to the equipment disposal.

“This is one of the best ways to add revenue on all your new sales (a healthy 30–40 points of margin) and take a pain point away from your customers, all while helping the environment and putting some green in your pocket,” says Matthew Nikravesh, president, Solarus Technologies, Inc., in New York and a regular user of Ingram Micro’s ITAD services.

To learn more or get started, simply contact your Ingram Micro sales team. And start asking your customers, “What are you doing with the old stuff?” at the beginning of your pitch—it’s a great way to help shorten your sales cycle.
