State of small business security in 2022

Fortinet recently released a new report about the state of small business security that breaks down areas of top concern and best practices for combating cyberthreats.

In a special As the Gears Turn edition, Devaughn Bittle and Patrick Cash speak with Joel Boyd, director of SMB Solutions at Fortinet, about:

  • The rationale behind the new SMB report
  • Cyber insurance
  • Fortinet’s product portfolio

New SMB report

Fortinet has been a long-time sponsor of the SMB Alliance and the company continues to find ways to support the community. One recent example of that dedication is the release of a new report about the state of small business security in 2022.

Fortinet noticed a gap in the usefulness of reports that purported to be about the SMB market. Most of those reports looked at SMB companies as one big monolith no matter whether they had 10 employees or 1,000. Fortinet felt there was room to bring more detail to the proceedings.

“What we’ve really set out to do for the past year, across all our stuff, is to really understand those micro differences as businesses are growing,” Joel says. “So, anytime we’re doing this kind of research, we make sure that we’ve segmented information that way.”

The importance of cybersecurity has increased significantly over the past year. SMBs are realizing that as they adopt more technology to grow their business, that technology is also increasing their attack surface and creating new areas for hackers to exploit.

Cyber insurance

The report touches upon the myth that cyber insurance is all you need. In the event of a security incident, the truth is that the cyber insurance company will ask you what you’ve done to safeguard yourself from bad actors. And the less you’ve done, the more you will have to pay.

“My biggest piece of advice is read that fine print,” Joel says. “Make sure you understand what they’re willing to pay and what the circumstances are.”

Fortinet’s product portfolio

One point came up time and again in the report: When companies were asked what they would have done differently with regard to cybersecurity, 61% said they wish they would’ve gone with a single-vendor solution.

Vendor management complexity is the top headache for a number of companies.

Fortinet developed SMB security products that offer a lot of bang for your buck. The company has a large portfolio of solutions and everything is integrated.

“We want to make sure folks have access to the solutions they need, when they need them,” Joel says, “almost a modular-type approach.”
